Lucy Student Pipeline Accelerator and Competency Enabler


 Are you an undergraduate science and engineering student interested in pursuing a career with NASA? Would you like to gain skills, knowledge, and competency in NASA mission protocols, procedures, and practices?


NASA’s Lucy Mission to Jupiter’s Trojan Asteroids is currently accepting applications for its new student collaboration program -  the Lucy Student Pipeline Accelerator and Competency Enabler (L’SPACE)Virtual Academy. This interactive, team and project-based, 12-week program is designed to engage a diverse population of college/university science and engineering students in rigorous, project-based STEM workforce development. 


  • Learn from NASA engineers and scientists; 
  • Participate and apply what you learn in mission-related design challenges; 
  • Strengthen your resume for internship and career opportunities; 
  • Receive mission development skills training;
  • Acquire strategies to help you effectively market your capabilities to NASA and other space-related companies/organizations; and
  • Gain helpful insights into the developing space economy workforce demands and opportunities.


The NASA L’SPACE Virtual Academy will give participants the opportunity to learn NASA mission procedures and protocols from mission professionals. Students will learn, practice, and hone collaboration and communication skills as they work on team projects with science and engineering students from across the country on geographically distributed teams (just like NASA missions do!). 


Students who successfully complete their assignments and demonstrate proficiency in specific skills/tasks will earn a certificate with endorsements to show applied workforce competency on internship, scholarship, or job applications.


Students will be expected to:

  • Attend weekly 1.5 hour classes and actively participate in all program activities; 
  • Virtually collaborate with other students to complete objectives;
  • Be respectful and consider all ideas of the other L'SPACE participants, team members, and mentors at all times;
  • Productively work within an assigned virtual team; 
  • Follow a schedule to complete the individual and team class assignments in a timely manner.
  • Understand they will not receive academic credit for this calss through their college/university but will be working towards a L'SPACE Certificate with endorsements for their completed work; and
  • Understand that they are voluntarily registering for this class in addition to their college/university coursework.


Who can apply?

Undergraduate science and engineering students enrolled in an accredited U.S. institution that have an interest in space exploration and desire to gain workforce development skills and learn about NASA missions. Students at both two- and four-year institutions are encouraged to apply.


Requirements to Participate

Access to a computer with Internet access and a headset (headphone with a microphone - can be bought for under $10).


When Class Occurs:

Start Date: Tuesdays or Thursdays this Fall 2019

Times: 4:30 PM PT / 7:30 PM ET

Duration: 12 weeks for 1.5 hours/week online plus homework and team projects



Application Deadline for Level 1, Summer 2019 : April 26, 2019 by 11:59 PM PT. Successful applicants will be notified of acceptance for the Summer 2019 L’SPACE Academy by May 1, 2019 - 5PM PT and must co

nfirm their acceptance no later than May 7, 2019 by 11:59pm PT. The first session begins Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 4:30 PM (PT) / 7:30 PM (ET).

More L’SPACE Program Information:

The L’SPACE Virtual Academy will have three virtual academies per year (Fall, Spring, and Summer).


There will be additional opportunities for students who successfully complete the L’SPACE Virtual Academy - Level 1. These include eligibility to: 

  • Participate in the L’SPACE Virtual Academy - Level 2; 
  • Apply for Lucy Internships; 
  • Apply to be a NASA Lucy Mission Ambassador; 
  • Attend Lucy Mission Updates from the Lucy Mission Team;
  • Attend special presentations from NASA Science Mission Directorate scientists and engineers;
  • Receive updates about other NASA opportunities;
  • Send their resumes to the L’SPACE Academy Alumni Program to be considered for jobs from NASA and NASA contractors.


About NASA’s Lucy Mission

The Lucy Mission is NASA’s first spacecraft to explore the outer Solar System asteroids known as the Jupiter Trojan Asteroids.  The mission is named after the early hominid fossil discovered by Donald Johanson and Tom Gray in the 70s. Just like that fossil, these Jupiter Trojan Asteroids are the fossil remnants of the early Solar System and will provide important keys to understanding the formation and early evolution of our Solar System.
